The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum offers a family friendly experience in the heart of Coventry. There are many galleries to explore and various events throughout the year to enjoy. The Herbert is opening Monday to Saturday 10am-4pm and Sundays 12pm-4pm. Entry to the Herbert is free, although donations will be very gratefully received. It is managed by the Culture Coventry trust, which also includes Coventry’s Transport Museum, and Lunt Roman Fort.

There are numerous galleries in the Herbert, all showing a different aspect of Coventry’s culture and history. ‘Elements’ is a sensory gallery, where you follow the path around to discover the feel of rocks and shells, the sound of music and bird song, and change the environment with the touch of a hand. The ‘History’ gallery takes you through time in Coventry, from the 1450s to the present day, through the Medieval period, Victorian period, and onwards of the Second World War. Discover the story of Godiva, hear different interpretations of the famous story of Godiva riding through the streets of Coventry and look at the paintings of her on horseback. ‘Art Since 1900’ is a place to use your imagination. With many abstract art to entertain the brain, alongside portraits and landscapes from the past century. ‘Peace and Reconciliation’ shows how Coventry impacted the world during the Second World War. After the bombing of Coventry Cathedral, the city went on a mission to spread peace around the world and connected with similarly effected cities, evidence of this can be found around Coventry today such as Lidice Place at the entrance to the Lower Precinct. There are other galleries within the museum, including ‘What’s in Store’ that gives an insight to the objects not on show in the galleries. There are stuffed animals, draws of coins, costumes, and a collection of clocks. There are also several spaces for temporary exhibitions, so there is always something new to see at the Herbert!

Many events and workshops take place at the Herbert for all ages. Learn a variety of new skills at the workshops, from stitching to metal work to linocut printing. If crafts are not for you, then there are exhibition openings, various stories and talks, and tours of the Coventry Archives. After normal opening hours, Herbert Lates take place. Herbert Lates often include crafts, performances, drinks, and more. During the school holidays, there are themed craft activities to get involved with, and for the younger children, there are sensory experiences such as stories and play days throughout the year.

Don’t forgot to visit the shops and Alfred’s Café. The Herbert is also home to the Coventry Archives and Coventry’s Tourist Information Centre, and have a tour of the Undercroft if you dare!
