The Earlsdon May Day Festival is coming up once again in the south of Coventry! On May Day Bank Holiday weekend, 7th May, the quaint festival will return to the Earlsdon high street. I was born in Earlsdon and have gone every year since I was a child (the past 25 years!) and have always enjoyed it. There are games for children, artistic stalls for adults and entertainment for all. The Festival moved location to Hearsall Common for a few years but is now back to its roots in the Earlsdon high street.
May Day has pagan roots, as was an agricultural celebration intended to ensure that the crops were fertile this was held by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Today this celebration has been adapted by gathering wild flowers or dancing around a Maypole to represent the lengthen days to come.
The Earlsdon festival celebrates this ancient tradition with local stalls, food and both non-traditional and traditional entertainment such as Morris dancing.
The event has a fabulously simple layout. Down the high street are stalls showcasing local art, selling plants from the local allotments and local food produce. Also, you have a chance to find a new book and treat yourself to some handmade baked goods or jewellery along with many other treats. Local charities will also get involved having raffle stands where you can try your luck to win some delightful prizes. As well on the high street is space for entertainment such as dancing and entertainment for children. If all this sounds too busy for you all the local bars will be open selling refreshing beverages for you to kick back, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. However, the festival does not stop there. As the local primary school will get involved and the churches selling donated items and has fun games for all.
The festival is a fun filled day for all, it is free to attend and suitable for all weathers due to the indoor venues. It is a key event in the Coventry calendar. If you are a local just take a walk down and if you are further a field drive down or catch the number 5 or 11 bus and find out what makes the Earlsdon Festival so unique.
