Opera Warwick are proud to present Smetana’s masterpiece 'The Bartered Bride', updated and re-energised for a modern stage and audience.
Will the opera’s lovers triumph over societal and parental expectations, or are they doomed to live out their days apart?
The backdrop to this romantic drama is formed by the arrival of a circus, and the beautiful dancers, graceful trapeze artists and ridiculous clowns who amuse and delight. Follow the show’s two protagonists as they attempt to navigate through this maze of parents, siblings, well-wishers, ne’er-do-wells, clowns, dancers, ringmasters, and even a bear, all whilst trying to test one another’s affections and decide which path to take.
But all is not what it seems - appearances can be deceiving, especially in a world of illusion, misdirection and magic! Beneath the exuberant performance of the circus lies a secret of mistaken and concealed identities. Whilst the terrifying bear may not be as dangerous as he appears, harmless village gossip could be an omen of disaster, and the characters are rapidly propelled onto a carousel of misunderstandings and misinformation. For Smetana’s protagonists, a new challenge lurks behind every corner of this heart-warming show.
This is an evening guaranteed to be full of theatrical magic, fairy-tale romance and some roaringly funny moments, in addition to the spectacular skills of some of the University of Warwick’s most talented performers. With a large cast of talented singers and a full pit orchestra, this show is definitely not one to miss!
