The event has a new date in October, but runners can take part in a virtual run on 21st March
The Coventry Festival of Running team are pleased to announce that the 2021 Coventry Half Marathon and 5k will take place on Sunday 31st October. The organising team from Coventry University Students’ Union are also working with Coventry City Council and the City of Culture Trust to secure a backup date in Spring 2022.
Runners will have the choice to participate in a virtual event on the originally scheduled date of 21st March 2021 or defer to the October date. They can also donate their entry fee to support the event’s partner charities: Coventry and Warwickshire MIND, Myton Hospice, Penny Appeal, SWFT, UHCW, and Zoe’s Place.
Event organiser Matt Wall said,
“The last twelve months have had a huge effect on the physical and mental health of so many people, and limited the fundraising opportunities for our partner charities, so we’re delighted to have a new date to share with our runners, residents, and partners.
“We want to ensure as many of our runners as possible get the chance to run, whether that’s 21st March or 31st October, and we hope to welcome many new runners too in what promises to be a memorable year for the city.
“We’d also like to say a huge thank you to all our entrants for their patience and support throughout. Coventry has always been a home of rebirth, resilience, and innovation and we’re proud of the work and support of everyone involved to make this event happen.”
Councillor Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader of Coventry City Council, said: “I’m delighted to hear that the Festival of Running has been given the go-ahead to take place later this year.
"I know the organisers will be taking every step possible to make this event a safe and enjoyable one for all supporters and participants.
"It's great to have city events like this in the diary as we enjoy our year as UK City of Culture 2021, especially those where people can take part to support their physical health and wellbeing, which we have seen has been a big focus right across the country in these challenging times recently.
"The festival provides for all fitness levels and I look forward to seeing many people and our local communities take part in the event."
The event promises to be a celebration of Coventry, an opportunity to support many local charities that have struggled over the last year, and the chance to focus on physical and mental wellbeing for people of all ages and abilities.
