Coventry Flames sparks city interest

Coventry Flames Basketball’, a Senior Men’s Basketball programme based within the city, will be competing in the National Basketball League for the 2018-19 season. The recently formed club have already started to recruit from pools of local and regional talent, as well as University athletes.

Whilst Coventry boasts a variety of Junior basketball programmes for the ever-growing number of under-18 development players, the opportunity for ‘Coventry Flames’ to step into a void for Senior Men’s Basketball seemed too good to resist. The outlet will allow talented local players to represent their city at a National League level, as well as develop a shared interest with a hugely popular and successful University programme in ‘Coventry University Basketball’.

Coventry residents will benefit from a playing experience, and the growth of a supporting community to grow, with league games being open to the public. Links with local clubs and sports have already begun, with a number of high profile clubs in discussions to cross-promote and develop working-relationships.

The existence of the ‘Flames’ coincides well with the excitement surrounding Coventry as the ‘City of Culture’ for 2021, and the #thisiscoventry campaign, as well as the fantastic news that Coventry will be ACES European city of Sport in 2019. Both titles allow for a more prominent community sports campaign within the city, for athletes and spectators alike.

Natalie Goulder, Student Activities Manager of Coventry University Students’ Union, said: “We are proud and excited to announce that Coventry Flames Basketball will be playing in Basketball England’s National League this coming season. Coventry Flames is a CUSU-led initiative to establish a National League basketball team for the city of Coventry, allowing us to build a shared community around that team across the City and University.”

The Flames will be playing their home games in the heart of the city, at Coventry Sports & Leisure Centre (Fairfax Street) on Sunday afternoons, and welcome spectators of all ages to the games FREE OF CHARGE!
