HOME- A High-Flying Performance

A spectacular performance – high above an audience on a building in Coventry city centre – will explore the changing face of the city this September.

HOME – which will combine high-flying aerial performance, choreography, projections and an electronic sound score – is a collaboration between Coventry-based Highly Sprung and circus theatre pioneers Upswing.

After weeks of creating the visuals, soundscapes and short films, the final performance will take place on Sunday, September 15 at 8.30pm on Coventry University’s Alison Gingell Building.

An audience will gather in a car park beneath the building and is set to be wowed by the scale of the performance which takes inspiration from Coventry’s architecture – from medieval times through to the present day.

It will also feature a community performance on the ground, alongside emerging aerial artists taking to the air.

HOME, which has been supported by Coventry City of Culture Trust, through Coventry’s Great Place Project, has seen the nurturing of local emerging dancers performing the final aerial piece while community performers have been engaged to create pre-show entertainment for audiences on the ground.

Jacqui Ibbotson, of Coventry City of Culture Trust, said: “HOME promises to be an exciting performance that will be a truly spectacular event in Coventry that will be memorable for the whole audience.

“It brings together a whole range of performance, music and projections that will be a feast for the eyes and the ears.

“There is a real sense of collaboration and participation on the project as Highly Sprung have come together with Upswing, while local people have also contributed to the visuals and the soundscape, Coventry University has helped to make it happen and young people will be part of the performance on the day.”

Zoe Drinkwater, of Highly Sprung, said the performance was taking inspiration from Coventry’s past, present and future.

She said: “HOME is exploring the changing architecture of Coventry to better understand the influence of its people on the city. Inspired by Coventry’s architectural history, we dare to dream what the future might hold, as our understanding of home becomes more fluid.

“Using imagery from Coventry’s existing architecture, both modern and medieval and taking inspiration from archives of architectural plans for the city old and new, we will build a story brick by brick, throwing new light onto old and celebrating the city’s future heritage.

“The final performance will take place above the heads of the audience and will immerse audiences in thoughts of how the city’s buildings tell the stories of the people that they housed.”

HOME is a free event, starting at 8.30pm on Sunday, September 15. It is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England, via Coventry City of Culture’s Great Place scheme.
